Case study

Faradion

Information

Faradion are market leaders in sodium ion battery technology, with applications in residential and industrial energy storage.

The Challenge

The patent landscape for lithium-ion technology was already crowded, making it difficult for a new entrant to compete in this market. The challenge was to build a business in a different technology area and, in particular, to overcome the common belief that sodium-ion chemistry would not be viable technologically or commercially.

How IP Asset supported:
  1. Developed an IP Roadmap to identify alternative technologies to lithium-ion and build a strong commercial business case around sodium-ion chemistry.
  2. Conducted freedom to operate (FTO) analysis to uncover opportunities for broad protection within the sodium-ion battery chemistry space.
  3. Provided funding support, helping to secure grant and investment capital to commercialise the technology based on the IP generated.
  4. Built and managed a high-value IP portfolio comprising over 60 patent families and 400 patent applications
  5. Defended the IP portfolio against challenges and during prosecution to maintain protection.
  6. Delivered IP due diligence and negotiation support, enabling a successful exit to Reliance and maximising portfolio value.
